President Donald J. Trump has proclaimed February 9, 2025, as the first-ever Gulf of America Day. The proclamation follows the president’s January 20 executive order, Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness, which officially renamed the body of water formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

The renaming, carried out by the Department of the Interior, reflects the administration’s commitment to celebrating America’s history and reclaiming its cultural and geographic identity.

The Gulf of America, bounded by the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, and extending to the seaward boundaries with Mexico and Cuba, has long been a vital asset to the nation’s economy, environment, and national security.

In his proclamation, President Trump emphasized the significance of the Gulf as an integral part of the United States. “The area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once-burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America,” the president stated.

“As my Administration restores American pride in the history of American greatness, it is fitting and appropriate for our great Nation to come together and commemorate this momentous occasion and the renaming of the Gulf of America,” Trump said.

In his proclamation, President Trump called on public officials and all Americans to observe Gulf of America Day with “appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.”

Just after Trump signed the executive order, the U.S. Coast Guard started using the term Gulf of America, marking the U.S. government’s first official use of the term.
