President-elect Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has agreed to implement measures to stop migration through Mexico to the U.S. southern border. The announcement follows a conversation between the two leaders focused on strategies to curb unauthorized migration and drug trafficking, which Trump described as “very productive.”
“Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border. We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs. It was a very productive conversation!” Trump said.

Trump declared the agreement would take effect immediately, emphasizing its significance in addressing migration and drug smuggling.
“Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effective immediately. THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thank you!!!” Trump added.
This development follows Trump’s recent warning that his administration would impose a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada starting on his first day in office if both nations failed to curb illegal migration and drug flows into the U.S. The proposed tariffs prompted a sharp response from Sheinbaum, who earlier this week cautioned against such measures and highlighted the need for collaborative solutions.
In a letter to Trump, Sheinbaum criticized the tariff threat and called for investment in development to address root causes of migration. She also pointed to U.S. accountability for the proliferation of firearms entering Mexico and emphasized her administration’s success in reducing migrant encounters at the border.

“President Trump, migration and drug consumption in the United States cannot be addressed through threats or tariffs,” Sheinbaum wrote. “What is needed is cooperation and mutual understanding to tackle these significant challenges.”
Focus on Border Security and Drug Trafficking
Trump’s announcement reflects his campaign promises to prioritize border security and combat the flow of drugs into the U.S. While details of the strategies discussed with Sheinbaum remain unspecified, the agreement marks a significant development in U.S.-Mexico relations.
Trump praised the cooperation of Sheinbaum’s administration, signaling that the partnership could lead to further agreements on border security and drug trafficking in the future.
This move comes as both nations navigate the complexities of migration policy, trade, and security cooperation. The implementation of the agreement and its impact on migration and drug trafficking are likely to be closely watched in the coming months.
