Post-Tropical Cyclone Helene Weakens, Continues To Bring Flooding To Southern Appalachians

Post-Tropical Cyclone Helene, although weakening, continues to cause catastrophic and historic flooding in parts of the Southern Appalachians. The risk of additional heavy rainfall is diminishing, but the Ohio Valley can still expect 1-2 inches of rain, with some isolated areas potentially receiving up to 3 inches. Lingering showers might persist in the central and southern Appalachians through Saturday.

Helene’s remnants are also generating life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along a significant portion of the Atlantic Seaboard, stretching from Florida to Long Island, NY.

The post-tropical cyclone itself is currently drifting southeastward and is expected to continue this slow movement along the Kentucky-Tennessee border through the weekend.

It has weakened considerably, with maximum sustained winds near 25 mph. Further weakening is anticipated in the coming days.
