Pope Francis, the first pontiff from Latin America who captivated the world with his humble approach and dedication to the poor, has died at the age of 88. The announcement was made by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo.

“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father,” stated Cardinal Kevin Farrell in announcing the Pope’s passing.

The cause of death has not been officially disclosed. Pope Francis had a history of chronic lung issues and had part of one lung removed in his youth.

He was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14, 2025, experiencing a respiratory crisis that progressed to double pneumonia. He remained hospitalized for 38 days, marking the longest hospitalization of his 12-year papacy.

Vice President JD Vance met with Pope Francis at the Vatican Sunday morning, following a week of engagements that included discussions with Vatican officials and attendance at significant Holy Week services.

On Monday, Vance said, “I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him. I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful. May God rest his soul.”

President Trump said on Truth Social Monday, “Rest in Peace Pope Francis! May God Bless him and all who loved him!”

The death of a pope initiates a series of long-standing rites and rituals within the Catholic Church. Attention now turns to the process of selecting his successor. Eligible cardinals will convene in the Sistine Chapel for a conclave to elect the next pontiff.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Pope Francis was elected in 2013 following the surprise resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. He was seen as bringing a renewed spirit to the 2,000-year-old institution, taking the helm at a time when the Catholic Church’s influence was perceived by many to be waning.
