New polling indicates former President Donald Trump remains the overwhelming favorite among Republican voters to be the party’s 2024 presidential candidate.
And surveys also indicate Trump could win a second term if he squares off against either of the people he ran against in the past two elections.
Regarding the first development, a national poll conducted last week by McLaughlin & Associates revealed that after a year in office President Joe Biden is wildly unpopular.
The poll found that 65 percent of the country says America is on the “wrong” track, and 57 percent disapprove of Biden’s performance so far.
The McLaughlin poll slightly outpaced the Real Clear Politics average of nine national polls conducted by other groups. The RCP average puts Biden at 55 percent disapproval.
On the right track-wrong track question, McLaughlin found that even 36 percent of Democrats and 39 percent of self-described liberals agree with the majority.
Spelling more trouble for Biden and Democrats, the poll found that the GOP has opened a 5-point lead on the generic congressional ballot. Based on the pollster’s data, that appears to be the Republican Party’s biggest lead since at least 2014.
When McLaughlin specifically asked about Trump, 70 percent of GOP respondents said they wanted the 45th president to run again.
If he did, 81 percent said they would support him, including 62 percent who replied that they would “strongly” support Trump.
Among Republicans, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was the only other person besides Trump to get double-digit support for a 2024 bid, garnering 13 percent.
The pollster also asked respondents about possible 2024 match-ups featuring Trump.
In a hypothetical rematch against Biden, Trump led his successor by a 49-44 margin.
McLaughlin also asked about Round 2 of the 2016 election. In that situation, Trump’s lead was even bigger. He led Hillary Clinton 51-41, the poll found.
As The Free Press recently reported, some top Democratic strategists have floated a comeback by Hillary as the party’s best hope in 2024, considering Biden’s consistently low approval numbers, which, although bad, are ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris.
