A new poll suggests that President Donald Trump’s approval rating has increased despite the controversy surrounding his administration’s “Liberation Day” reciprocal tariffs.
According to a DailyMail.com/J.L. Partners survey of over 1,000 registered voters conducted from March 31 to April 3, 2025, President Trump’s approval rating has risen to 53 percent. This represents a 4-point increase compared to the previous week’s rating of 49 percent.
The poll’s findings are notable given the criticism the White House has faced regarding the tariffs, which were signed into order on Wednesday.
Key findings of the poll:
- President Trump’s approval rating increased by 13 points among voters aged 18 to 29 since March 7.
- His favorability also saw a 6-point increase among both Democrats and independents.
- Support among black voters for President Trump rose by 17 points since the previous week.

The poll also examined public opinion on the tariffs themselves:
- 36 percent of respondents support President Trump’s 10 percent minimum tariff on all goods from other countries.
- 28 percent oppose the policy.
- 36 percent are unsure.
- 39 percent of registered voters support increasing tariffs on all goods from foreign countries, while 37 percent oppose it, and 24 percent are unsure.
- Voter support for tariffs on China and the European Union has increased since the previous month.
- There is broad support for tariffs on specific sectors, including aircraft, plastics, precious metals, and iron and steel.
However, the Daily Mail noted the potential economic consequences of the tariffs. The conservative advocacy group Advancing American Freedom estimates that the tariffs could cost American families over $3,500 annually, with major purchases like homes and cars potentially increasing by $7,000.
The administration’s stance on tariffs appears to be evolving. President Trump indicated a willingness to negotiate deals in a Truth Social post on Friday, stating he had a “very productive call” with Vietnam about reducing tariffs.

Meanwhile, China has retaliated against the U.S. tariffs by imposing its own 34 percent tariffs on U.S. goods. Chinese officials have criticized the U.S. policy as a violation of international trade rules. President Trump responded on social media, accusing China of making a “wrong decision.”
The poll results and the ongoing trade developments contribute to the debate surrounding the economic impact and political implications of the Trump administration’s tariff policies.
