A recent poll has uncovered a startling revelation about the views of the Hispanic community in the United States on the contentious issue of immigration.

According to a CBS News/YouGov survey of registered voters, a majority of Hispanics – a staggering 53% – expressed support for a “new national program to deport all undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S. illegally.”

This finding challenges the long-held assumption that the Hispanic electorate overwhelmingly opposes deportation efforts, and it has significant implications for the ongoing national debate on immigration reform.

The poll results indicate that the desire for a comprehensive deportation program extends well beyond the Hispanic community. In fact, the survey found that 62% of all registered voters in the United States favor such a program, with only 38% opposing it.

This cross-cutting support cuts across demographic lines, with majorities of both women (58%) and college-educated individuals (58%) also backing the idea of mass deportation.

When examining the poll’s crosstabs, an intriguing pattern emerges regarding the racial and ethnic dynamics surrounding this issue. While 67% of white respondents favored the proposed deportation program, the support among Black voters was significantly lower at 47%.

Interestingly, the Hispanic community’s level of support, at 53%, fell somewhere in between these two extremes.

These survey findings have the potential to reshape the political landscape, particularly in the context of the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

The presumptive Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump, has made cracking down on immigration a central pillar of his campaign platform. The poll results suggest that his hardline stance on this issue may resonate with a broader swath of the electorate, including a sizable portion of the Hispanic community.
