President Joe Biden hopes to reinvigorate his disastrous and still-failing presidency in time for the November election by promoting former President Donald Trump as an insurrectionist.
Yet new data indicates that argument is a loser.
The Miami Herald reported on Thursday that just 51% of respondents to a new poll about the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol oppose a congressional resolution that seeks to exonerate Trump of the insurrection allegation.

Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz proposed that resolution in February after the liberal Colorado Supreme Court removed Trump from the state’s election ballot.
As the Tampa Free Press reported at the time, Gaetz’s document declared that Trump “did not engage in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or give aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”
According to Congress.gov, 71 Republicans endorse Gaetz’s resolution today—more than one-third of the GOP caucus and six more than two months ago.
According to the Herald, Navigator Research, a left-wing pollster, conducted the poll.
On the other side of the debate, 38% supported Gaetz’s resolution, while 11% were unsure.
The Herald framed the issue as the majority, albeit “slim,” of respondents believing Trump did commit an insurrection because of their opposition to Gaetz’s measure.
Trump has never been charged with nor convicted of insurrection, which is an actual federal crime that Biden’s politicized Justice Department could charge him with.

And as time goes on, more Americans are siding with Gaetz.
An ABC News-Washington Post poll taken a week after the riot at the Capitol found that 71% believed Trump bore a “great deal,” “good amount,” or just “some” of the responsibility for the violence that day.
The Pew Research Center just 13 months later found that 67% of respondents believe Trump was at least somewhat responsible for the riot. That same poll found that 32% said Trump had no responsibility at all, which was up from 24% in January 2021.
Now, as the Herald reported, based on their opposition to Gaetz’s resolution, only 51% think Trump was an insurrectionist, while 38% side with Gaetz.
