Federal and state prosecutors are trying to jail former President Donald Trump for claiming that the 2020 presidential election was “stolen” from him.

If they succeed in proving that’s a crime, liberals better find some more jail space. A lot more.

A recent poll found that more than one-third of voters appear to agree with Trump that Joe Biden was not legitimately elected in 2020, according to The Hill.

On Tuesday, The Hill reported on a recent survey by The Washington Post and the University of Maryland, which looked at 1,014 voters’ opinions about the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. Saturday marks the third anniversary of the riot.

The more recent poll used a similar survey from December 2021 as its benchmark.

The new survey found that 36% of respondents think Biden was not “legitimately elected” in 2020. That was up from 29% in the original poll.

A corresponding decline was found in the ratio of people who think the 2020 results were on the up and up.

Two years ago, 69% of respondents believed Biden had a legit claim to the White House. Now, that’s down to 62%.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Republicans harbor the biggest doubts about Biden’s victory.

As The Hill reported, “The biggest drop in those who said the 2020 election results were legitimate came from Republicans — 31 percent in 2023, down from 39 percent two years earlier.”

Yet surety about Biden’s victory also has slipped among independents, a key voting bloc that helped him in 2020.

In December 2021, 72% agreed that Biden won fair and square; today, that number is down to 66%.

Democrats still cling strongly to the outcome, but the ranks of the few who have doubts are increasing.

In the current survey, 91% of Democrats agreed that Biden was legitimately elected. But that was down from 94% in December 2021.

Yet also on Tuesday, The Hill and other liberal media outlets promoted an opinion article by Ken Block that appeared in USA Today.

Block, who owns Simpatico Software Systems, said the Trump campaign hired him after the election to cull voter data to prove that fraud tilted the election in Biden’s favor.

“The campaign found no evidence of voter fraud sufficient to change the outcome of any election,” Block wrote.

“Voter fraud is detectable, quantifiable and verifiable. I have yet to see anyone offer up ‘evidence’ of voter fraud from the 2020 election that provides these three things,” Block added.

The problem, however, is that Trump and others don’t readily define what “stolen” means.

Many conservative commentators have, for instance, asserted that the news media and social media putting their thumbs, if not entire arms, on the scale for Biden influenced the outcome — such as stifling claims about the damaging material found on Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop.
