The Biden administration’s messaging that fostered the chaos at the Kabul airport appears to reflect what it says that’s created the chaos at the southern border: If you can get here, you can come to America, or at least some place similar.
And so far, the administration is obliging.
The New York Times reported on Sunday that the U.S. had rescued 2,500 Americans since Aug. 14, one day before the Taliban retook Kabul. Meanwhile, Biden himself noted on that almost 28,000 total people had been removed from harm’s way.
In other words, fewer than one of every 10 people who’ve left Afghanistan is an American.
But a new poll shows that Americans themselves are positively Trumpian on this question.
They want President Joe Biden to put America first.
Rasmussen Reports touted its poll released Monday that showed likely voters “place more importance on getting U.S. citizens out of Afghanistan than they do on evacuating refugees seeking to flee the Taliban.”
Rasmussen notes 96 percent of those surveyed agree with that, including 86 percent who describe that as “very important.”
“The importance of rescuing Americans in Afghanistan is a strong consensus across every demographic category,” Rasmussen added. Among respondents, 87 percent of Republicans, 86 percent of Democrats and 84 percent of those unaffiliated with either major party agreed such a move was “very important” for the U.S. government to prioritize the flight of American citizens.
It’s not that Americans don’t want to help frightened Afghans. But there is a divide over how much help to provide.
According to Rasmussen, Biden’s “strongest supporters are generally more sympathetic to Afghanistan refugees. Among voters who Strongly Approve of Biden’s job performance as president, 64% say it is Very Important that the U.S. government help Afghanistan refugees who want to escape the Taliban, and 43% are in favor of resettling more than 50,000 refugees in the United States.”
“By contrast, among voters who Strongly Disapprove of Biden’s performance, 43% say it is Very Important that the U.S. government help Afghanistan refugees who want to escape the Taliban, and just 23% are in favor of resettling more than 50,000 refugees in the United States.”
Novel concept: Americans wanting their president to put Americans first.
