Florida added more than 220,000 new residents from elsewhere in the country last year, as California and New York each reported losing more than 350,000, as The Free Press recently reported.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd has a theory. People want to come to Florida because it’s safer.
At an event in Jacksonville on Monday, at which Judd and 54 other Florida sheriffs endorsed Republican Sen. Marco Rubio for re-election, Judd praised Rubio for “tirelessly” working to support cops and fight crime – something he has not seen from Democrats in Congress, and in particular liberal Rep. Val Demings, who is running to be the Democrats’ Senate nominee challenging Rubio this year.
“What I saw was the U.S. House of Representatives and Val Deming’s voting to Defund the Police,” said Judd, according to Breitbart News. “To cost the taxpayers more money. To make it easier to prosecute the police who are putting their life on the line in Orlando, Florida, and across this United States of America.”
“I want you to look around the nation,” Judd continued. “Portland, Oregon. Seattle, Washington. Baltimore. Chicago. Washington DC. Wisconsin. You didn’t see peaceful protests when they were burning buildings and smashing cars and injuring people.”
Instead, he added, “What you saw was lawlessness. Now, quite frankly, the reason those things occur in those communities is because of the rule-makers. They allow that. It’s because of the community. They allow that. Senator Rubio in this state has said no.”
Judd noted that just during the pandemic, Polk County has added 48,000 newcomers.
“Why are they coming to Florida? Because we’re safe because it’s a place to be. Who wants to live in Portland? So when you go to bed at night, you don’t know if your car’s going to be there the next day or if your windows are going to be smashed or if they’re going to set the house on fire?” Judd said.
“There’s real fear in those places. In the state of Florida, when you go to bed at night, you think about, do I go to Disney or the beaches? We got a U.S. senator who is simply the very best for Florida,” he added. “It’s Marco Rubio.”
The sheriff made a similar point last year, when he joined Gov. Ron DeSantis for the signing of the so-called “anti-rioting” bill, which beefed up penalties for looters and rioters.
“You can compare and contrast. Look at Seattle, Portland, Minneapolis. That’s no way to treat the community, that’s no way to treat those that put their entire life into building their business. We saw folks’ businesses burn around this nation who literally had worked their entire life and had every penny of their life savings involved,” Judd said at the time, as The Free Press reported.
“There’s a reason that this place is fun, there’s a reason why we have a 49-year low crime rate and the same people that don’t think we should have an anti-rioting bill. are the same ones that think we ought to let more people out of prison,” he continued
“Welcome to Florida, but don’t register to vote in the stupid way you did up north. You’ll get what they got,” he said.
