POLK COUNTY, Fla. – Polk County Public Schools (PCPS) will close schools and offices beginning Tuesday, October 8th, in anticipation of Hurricane Milton. While schools will remain open today, all after-school activities and sports have been canceled.
Several PCPS schools will be activated as storm shelters beginning at noon tomorrow. It is crucial to note that not all schools will serve as shelters.

Shelter Locations:
- General Population Shelters: Auburndale High, Spessard Holland Elementary, Citrus Ridge Civics Academy, Horizons Elementary, George Jenkins High, Highlands Grove Elementary, Kathleen High, R. Bruce Wagner Elementary, Sleepy Hill Elementary, Mulberry Middle, Marion Creek Middle, Chain of Lakes Elementary, Winter Haven High
- Pet-Friendly Shelters: Haines City High, Lake Region High, Tenoroc High
- Special Needs Shelters: FDOH Polk Specialty Care Unit, Ridge Community High, McKeel Academy
Important Shelter Information:
- Identification Required: Adults must present a valid photo ID for entry.
- Prohibited Items: Weapons, alcohol, and perishable food items are not allowed.
- Pets: Pets are only permitted at designated pet-friendly shelters. Pet owners must bring vaccination records, an airline-approved carrier, and pet food.
- Medications: Bring a 7-day supply of medications and any necessary medical documentation.
- Personal Items: Pack essential items like toiletries, extra clothing, and important documents.
- Comfort Items: Cots are not provided. Bring blankets, pillows, and other items for comfort.

Special Needs Shelters:
Special needs shelters are for individuals with medical conditions requiring electricity, oxygen, or dialysis, and those with physical or cognitive conditions who need assistance. These shelters will open at 7 a.m. tomorrow.
