POLK COUNTY, Fla. – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the tragic death of Deputy Gregory Maynard, 32, of Davenport. Deputies responded to Maynard’s residence late Sunday night after receiving reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival at approximately 10:08 p.m., deputies discovered Maynard in his bedroom with a single gunshot wound to his head. An adult woman and a child were present in the home at the time but did not directly witness the shooting.

Preliminary evidence from the scene, coupled with interviews conducted by investigators, suggests that Maynard’s death was self-inflicted. However, the Medical Examiner’s Office will officially determine the cause and manner of death.
