The Yes on 4 campaign’s latest TV ad has been rated “Mostly False” by PolitiFact, which criticized the ad for misleading Floridians about the state’s existing abortion laws.

Contrary to the ad’s claims, PolitiFact confirmed that Florida law currently includes exceptions for the health and life of the pregnant woman, as well as in cases of rape, incest, and human trafficking.

This rating is just the latest example of what critics say is a pattern of deception from the backers of Amendment 4. According to opponents, the language of the amendment is intentionally vague and confusing, with key terms left undefined. They argue that the amendment’s supporters are trying to trick Floridians into supporting a measure that is far more extreme than it appears.

The debunked TV ad has raised concerns among Amendment 4’s critics, who argue that the campaign is deliberately hiding the truth. They claim that if passed, Amendment 4 would:

  • Weaken parental rights by removing the requirement for parental consent for minors seeking an abortion,
  • Open the door to taxpayer-funded elective abortions, including late-term procedures, and
  • Compromise women’s safety by eliminating the requirement for a licensed medical doctor to perform abortions.

Opponents warn that Amendment 4 is far more extreme than it seems, and accuse its supporters of deflecting attention from its true consequences. They believe that once voters understand the full impact of the amendment, they will reject it.
