A significant breakthrough in a 24-year-old cold case led to the arrest of Gary Durrance, 73, for the murder of Sherry Holtz in December 1999 in the City of Sanford.

Holtz was found deceased in a wooded area, and a knife with trace DNA was recovered at the scene.

The case remained unsolved despite extensive investigation at the time, including numerous interviews and evidence analysis.

Advancements in DNA technology allowed investigators to re-examine the evidence, ultimately linking Durrance, Holtz’s former boyfriend, to the crime.

Durrance was arrested in Volusia County on July 18, 2024, and is currently being held in the Seminole County Jail on charges of second-degree homicide.
