In a breakthrough that brought closure to a decades-long mystery, Miramar Police Department announced the resolution of a 37-year-old cold case involving the brutal murder of William “Billy” Halpern, a former firefighter and avid bodybuilder.
On October 21, 1986, Halpern was found dead in his Miramar home, a victim of a violent attack involving beating, stabbing, and strangulation.
Despite an extensive investigation at the time, the case went cold, leaving Halpern’s family and friends without answers for decades.

However, in January 2024, Detective Danny Smith reopened the case, driven by the discovery of partial DNA profiles that could be analyzed with modern technology.
The renewed investigation also benefited from a public plea for information, which led to numerous tips from the community.
“If Harry Collier were alive today, Miramar Police would be charging him with the murder of Billy Halpern,” the department stated in an official announcement.pen_spark
The case is not entirely closed, as investigators believe there may have been another individual involved in the crime. The Miramar Police Department urges anyone with further information to come forward, ensuring that all those responsible for this tragic act are held accountable.
