HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – A patient being transported in a Hillsborough County Fire Rescue ambulance has died following a crash Friday night in Hillsborough County. Two crew members were also injured in the incident.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at the intersection of McGee Road and State Road 39 around 11:35 p.m. The ambulance, driven by a 26-year-old firefighter/EMT, was traveling eastbound on McGee Road in non-emergency mode.

A Peterbilt tractor-trailer, driven by a 52-year-old Wesley Chapel man, was traveling northbound on SR-39.

The ambulance reportedly failed to yield the right of way and entered the intersection, where it was struck by the tractor-trailer. The impact caused the ambulance to overturn, while the tractor-trailer jackknifed onto the shoulder of the road.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. The ambulance driver and a 47-year-old crew member sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital.

Tragically, a 64-year-old female patient of Plant City, who was being transported in the ambulance, was also injured in the crash. She was taken to a hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
