PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – Following the devastating impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, Pinellas County Consumer Protection is urging residents to be cautious when hiring contractors for home repairs.

Red Flags to Watch For:

  • Unsolicited Offers: Be wary of contractors who show up at your door offering services.
  • Demands for Full Payment Upfront: Avoid contractors who insist on full payment before starting work.
  • Claims that Permits Aren’t Needed: Reputable contractors will obtain necessary permits.

Tips for Hiring a Contractor:

  • Verify Licenses and Insurance: Hire only licensed and insured contractors. Verify their license online at www.myfloridalicense.com and use the Contractor Search tool on the Pinellas County Construction Licensing Board website (PCCLB).
  • Get a Written Contract: Ensure you have a detailed written contract outlining the scope of work and payment terms.
  • Don’t Pay in Full Until Work is Complete: Make payments as work progresses and obtain a final affidavit confirming all subcontractors and suppliers have been paid.
  • Insist on Inspections: Make sure the contractor has the work inspected by the building department before final payment.

Resources for Homeowners:

  • Florida’s Disaster Contractors Network (DCN): This free resource connects homeowners with licensed contractors for emergency repairs. Visit DCNOnline.org to find qualified contractors in your area.

Price Gouging Protections:

Pinellas County is under a state of emergency declaration, activating Florida’s price gouging law. This law prohibits excessive price increases for essential goods and services. Report suspected price gouging to Pinellas County Consumer Protection at (727) 464-6200 or the Attorney General’s hotline at 1-866-9-NO-SCAM.

Beware of Charity Scams:

Be cautious of charities soliciting donations for hurricane relief. Verify their registration with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services using their Check-A-Charity tool. Avoid high-pressure tactics and donate by check made payable to the organization, not an individual.
