Pinellas County Under Air Pollution Advisory Due To Elevated Ozone Levels

Clearwater Beach, Florida

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – Public Works Air Quality Division of Pinellas County has issued an Air Pollution Precautionary Advisory today, Thursday, April 17, which will continue until Friday, April 18, because of high ground-level ozone levels.

Current models show that ozone levels are expected to reach moderate levels while Air Quality Index (AQI) values will stay between 51 and 100. These ozone levels could rise to become “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” with AQI values between 101 and 150.

Those who experience sensitivity to ozone and people with respiratory conditions such as asthma, along with older adults and young people, should adopt protective measures while outdoors. Active individuals need to take precautionary steps. During the advisory period, sensitive groups should reduce their outdoor activities that are both long-lasting and physically demanding.

Experts have identified high temperatures along with dry air conditions and the presence of a high-pressure system as key factors behind the elevated ozone levels in the region. Public Works has stated that these conditions promote the development and buildup of ground-level ozone.

Public Works Air Quality section will maintain ongoing monitoring of the situation. Public Works could lift the advisory earlier if the AQI forecast shows improvement. Public Works advises residents to monitor air quality updates and follow health protection measures.
