Pinellas County Sheriff: Accidental Shooting Death Under Investigation In St. Petersburg

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – Detectives with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of 50-year-old Kevin Bishop, who was accidentally shot in the chest during a gathering with his roommate on July 21st.

Deputies responded to a call at 8198 49th Avenue North in Unincorporated St. Petersburg around 4:57 p.m. and found Bishop with a single gunshot wound. His roommate, 57-year-old William Tompkins, was present at the scene.

The investigation revealed that both men had been drinking and handling firearms. Bishop had assured Tompkins that the weapons were unloaded, but during a moment of careless horseplay, a Glock 21 accidentally discharged, fatally wounding Bishop in the chest.

Tompkins immediately called 911, but Bishop was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Next of kin has been notified.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Homicide & Robbery Unit continues to investigate the incident.
