The Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) has awarded the prestigious 2024 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award to Sergeant Jake Viano and Corporal Matt Aitken of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
The duo, who share a long history of camaraderie and mentorship, were recognized for their exceptional courage and selfless actions during a life-threatening encounter with an armed suspect on March 12, 2023.
The incident unfolded when Corporal Aitken and his K-9 partner, Taco, responded to a call regarding a suspicious person attempting to break into vehicles. Sergeant Viano, abandoning his assigned area, joined the pursuit.

While tracking the suspect, they were ambushed, with Aitken sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. In the face of grave danger, Viano heroically returned fire, fatally wounding the assailant and saving Aitken’s life.
“The unwavering dedication and courage that Sergeant Viano and Corporal Aitken have shown in the course of duty is truly commendable,” said FSA President and Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell. “Their impact on the community embodies the spirit of this award. Today we celebrate their courageous and dedicated service.”
The award was presented at the FSA Summer Conference. Viano and Aitken continue to serve at the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, while K-9 Taco has enjoyed a well-deserved retirement.
