PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office will receive a PETA Compassionate Police Department Award to recognize the actions of Deputy Baldwin, who rescued seven baby opossums after finding their mother dead on the side of the road on March 19th.

Deputy Baldwin, while on patrol, remembered that baby opossums can survive for a time in their mother’s pouch even after she dies. Upon closer inspection, he discovered several of the babies were still alive. He quickly transported them to BluePearl Pet Hospital on Busch Lake Boulevard, where they are currently receiving specialized care.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office highlighted Deputy Baldwin’s actions on Facebook, emphasizing the importance of contacting animal control when a dead opossum is found on the road. They stated that the infant animals “deserve a chance at life, and we couldn’t be prouder of Deputy Baldwin for going above and beyond to give them one.”

PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien praised Deputy Baldwin’s actions, stating, “Without their mother, these baby opossums were completely helpless and almost certainly would have perished if not for the quick thinking and kindness of Deputy Baldwin. PETA is honoring his compassion and urges everyone to follow his lead by staying alert when driving and always stopping when they see an animal in need.”

PETA is reminding drivers that baby animal season is underway and that wildlife is more active. They urge drivers to be extra cautious on roads and to slow down to avoid hitting animals.

The organization also advises drivers who encounter an animal crossing the road to safely pull over and help the animal reach the other side. Individuals who find injured animals are encouraged to contact their local animal control agency, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, or 911, and to stay with the animal until help arrives.

Deputy Baldwin will be presented with a framed certificate and vegan chocolates in recognition of his compassionate rescue.
