The Department of Defense (DoD) has launched an aggressive investigation into recent unauthorized disclosures of sensitive and classified information, citing serious breaches of national security communications involving senior Pentagon officials.

In a memorandum released Thursday, DoD Chief of Staff Joseph Kasper directed the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security to begin an immediate probe into the leaks. The effort will be spearheaded by the Director for Defense Intelligence overseeing Counterintelligence, Law Enforcement, and Security.

“Recent unauthorized disclosures of national security information involving sensitive communications with principals within the Office of the Secretary of Defense demand immediate and thorough investigation,” Kasper wrote in the directive.

The investigation will examine how classified information was accessed and disseminated, with a particular focus on internal security protocols and oversight. The probe will be conducted in collaboration with relevant DoD stakeholders, federal agencies, and information security authorities. Officials also confirmed that polygraph examinations will be used as part of the process, in accordance with applicable law and policy.

According to the directive, the investigation is set to culminate in a full report to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, detailing the extent of the breaches and offering recommendations to tighten internal controls and prevent future leaks.

Kasper made clear that if the investigation identifies any individuals responsible for the disclosures, the information will be immediately referred to criminal law enforcement for possible prosecution.

While specific details of the leaked material have not been publicly disclosed, the leaks are believed to involve sensitive internal communications between top Pentagon leadership, raising concerns about the integrity of ongoing military operations and policy planning.

The investigation comes amid a broader push by the Trump administration to restore what it calls “discipline and accountability” across the Department of Defense. Defense Secretary Hegseth has pledged to return the Pentagon to its “core mission” of warfighting and has emphasized transparency and security as top priorities.

This marks one of the most sweeping internal security reviews initiated under the new administration, reflecting the Pentagon’s increasing concern over information security in an era of heightened geopolitical tension and cyber threats.

The Department has not set a public timeline for the conclusion of the investigation but confirmed that findings will be shared with top leadership and potentially Congress, depending on the severity and scope of the leaks uncovered.
