The Cook Political Report has reclassified the Pennsylvania Senate race between incumbent Democratic Senator Bob Casey and Republican challenger Dave McCormick as a “toss-up” just two weeks before Election Day, signaling increasing competition in the key battleground state.

Previously viewed as leaning Democratic, the shift highlights the narrowing margin in what is a crucial race not only for Pennsylvania but for control of the U.S. Senate. Cook Political Report Editor Jessica Taylor noted the tightening of races across several battleground states, referring to Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin as pivotal contests that could decide the size of a potential GOP majority.

“The next tier of four races in our Toss Up column will likely to determine the size of a GOP majority,” Taylor wrote. “Historically, most of the contests in this column have broken one way, and we wouldn’t be shocked to see that happen again.”

Both candidates quickly responded to the update on social media, with McCormick declaring, “Pennsylvanians want CHANGE. And we’re going to deliver it,” while Casey urged supporters to step up efforts as the race tightens.

Polling averages show Casey’s lead shrinking, with a new Atlas Intel poll even placing McCormick slightly ahead for the first time.

The race has drawn national attention, as Pennsylvania remains one of the most evenly divided states between Democrats and Republicans. With a narrow Democratic majority in the Senate, the outcome of this race could prove pivotal in determining which party controls the chamber after November 5.

The Cook Political Report’s reclassification of Pennsylvania, along with other battleground Senate races, underscores the high stakes as both parties vie for control in the midterms.
