A 30-year-old Pennsylvania man is recovering at a hospital after jumping from the 2nd story of an airport parking garage following the brutal stabbing death of his mother.
Officers from the Altoona Police Department were dispatched to a residence on the 200 block of E Maple Avenue at 1:43 PM on Wednesday to investigate a possible death. When officers arrived, they discovered the 61-year-old female victim, Maureen Mazenko, dead in the living room from a stab wound to the neck.
Several Altoona Police Detectives responded to the scene to investigate. Mazenko and her 30-year-old son, Joshua Leyo, lived at the residence, according to the investigation.

Leyo was not on scene at the time and could not be found.
Detectives discovered that Leyo had been treated for a hand laceration at the UPMC Altoona Hospital Emergency Room on the morning of February 13, 2024.
However, Leyo had already left the hospital. Leyo was tracked down near the Pittsburgh International Airport. Further investigation revealed that Leyo was using Mazenko’s bank account to take an Uber from Altoona and make other purchases in the Pittsburgh area.
Altoona Police officers contacted the Department of Homeland Security and the Allegheny County Police Department, who informed them that Leyo had jumped from the second floor of the airport parking garage and was currently being treated for serious injuries at Allegheny General Hospital.
Allegheny County Police responded to the hospital and detained Leyo.
Altoona police detectives then went to Allegheny General Hospital to interview Leyo. During the interview, Leyo admitted to stabbing Mazenko in the neck after they had a verbal argument. Leyo left the house believing she had died.
Leyo is currently in Allegheny General Hospital, awaiting extradition to Blair County and arraignment on First-Degree Murder charges.
