NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco held a press conference Friday to discuss a deputy-involved shooting that occurred in the Little Road area of New Port Richey.

According to Sheriff Nocco, deputies responded to a call Friday about a man attempting to break into a gun store. The suspect, identified as Scott Youmans, was armed with a knife and exhibited erratic behavior.

Despite repeated attempts by deputies to de-escalate the situation, Youmans advanced towards them aggressively. Fearing for their safety, deputies deployed less-lethal weapons and ultimately fired their service weapons.

“The subject was an extremely close proximity to the deputies. He was charging at them with the knife,” said Nocco. “It wasn’t like he was walking. He started in a dead-out sprint.”

Youmans was injured and transported to a local hospital, where he is in surgery, according to Nocco.
