Pasco County Man Arrested For Attempting To Cash Fraudulent Check In Hernando County

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – A Pasco County transient was arrested after attempting to cash a fraudulent check at a Hernando County bank.

On March 13, 2025, Hernando County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of an attempted fraud at Capital City Bank, located at 14001 Cortez Boulevard. The suspect was identified as Daniel Ryan Lawless, 43, a transient from Pasco County.

According to bank tellers, Lawless presented a check for $1,800, payable to himself, drawn from the Board of County Commissioners Dixie County. Upon verification, the Financial Director of the Board of County Commissioners Dixie County confirmed the check was unauthorized and fraudulent.

During questioning by deputies, Lawless admitted that on March 12, 2025, he met two unidentified men in a white sedan in Pasco County. The men offered him an opportunity to make money.

Lawless provided his personal information and met with them again on March 13, 2025. He was then given the fraudulent check, containing his information, and instructed to tell the bank teller he was a janitor.

Lawless acknowledged that he knew he did not work for the organization and that he should not have attempted to cash the check.

Lawless was arrested and charged with:

  • Uttering a Forged Instrument
  • Criminal Use of Personal Identification

He was given a $2,000 bond.
