South Florida Measles Outbreak Subsides As Health Department Touts Balanced Approach

We have more proof of left-wing media malfeasance against Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and, more specifically, state Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo.

Here are a few examples regarding measles, an outbreak of which occurred recently in heavily Democratic Broward County.

The Guardian, a left-wing website, accused Ladapo of “quackery” and claimed he continued “to ignore medical science” to stop the outbreak.

An NPR headline said, “Florida’s response to measles outbreak troubles public health experts.”

Dr. Leana Wen, the former head of Planned Parenthood and avid supporter of COVID masking and lockdowns, wrote in The Washington Post that Ladapo’s reaction caused a “devastating and preventable tragedy.”

What upset these liberal hand-wringers?

To recap, the Florida Department of Health began investigating the measles outbreak — which for any communicable disease occurs when two people get sick without being related or living together — at a Broward elementary school on Feb. 16.

Almost immediately Ladapo issued a directive telling parents at the school to keep kids home because of the “high likelihood of infection.” He recommended 21 days, which is the incubation period for measles.

Ladapo, however, added another provision. He broke from the traditional practice of simply shutting down the whole school and allowed parents to decide whether kids would attend classes.

His reasoning was that the community already possessed a high immunity rate based on previous vaccines and prior infection — in short, herd immunity.

On Friday, the day after the window closed on the incubation period, the FDOH issued a press release noting that no additional measles cases were reported at the school.

The department also pointed out that Ladapo’s approach balanced public health with continuing students’ education “without forced isolation or heavy-handed government intervention.”

“Once again, Florida has shown that good public health policy includes personal responsibility and parents’ rights,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “While the national medical health establishment and media have lost the public’s confidence, Florida continues to restore sanity and reason to public health, and will always do so under my leadership.”

“It’s important that public health leaders consider all available data and make decisions that promote health while respecting the rights of individuals,” said State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo. “Under the leadership of Governor DeSantis, I will always serve with integrity and prioritize a holistic approach to public health that tunes into the needs of Floridians – and tunes out the noise.”

But here’s the rub.

While the media was almost losing its collective mind over Ladapo’s “quackery,” states that practice public health the way they like were also dealing with measles.

The FDOH noted in its release that 16 other states reported measles cases, including left-wing havens such as California, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.

Florida reported the most, with 10 of the 45 cases known nationally. But Pennsylvania had nine, with eight of those in Philadelphia, and Washington had six.

Yet no one is writing op-eds trashing their approach. Wonder why.
