Op-Ed: No, Mr. President, I’m Not Garbage

Following President Joe Biden’s comments Tuesday night, calling supporters of former President Donald Trump ‘garbage,’ I felt compelled to jot down some of the reasons that I’m voting for Trump.

But before I dig into that, let me educate Mr. Biden and the mainstream media on the comedian, not necessarily a supporter of Trump, who spoke at the Madison Square Garden rally and called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.”

Tony Hinchcliffe is a comedian who happens to be great at insulting people, places, and things. For example, Netflix and the Tom Brady roast. While this type of comedy may have a place at a club or a roast, it was, in my opinion, stupid to have it at the MSG Trump rally. But it was a joke, and not a joke told by Trump, JD Vance, or anyone but the comedian who was hired or volunteered to be at the event. This is common sense.

However, sir, your comments were not a joke, and no matter the spin placed on them by some in the media and your staff following your statement, they were your thoughts.

The good news is, this is America, and you have every right to call Trump supporters ‘garbage’ as your Vice President Kamala Harris and some in the media have every right to call Republicans fascists or Nazis. Even though we aren’t.

Yes, there are stupid people on both sides of the political spectrum, Mr. President, that say or do stupid things, but to classify millions of people as ‘garbage’ because they support a certain political candidate is not the American way.

We are firefighters, cops, veterans, nurses, lawyers, scholars, artists, and musicians. We are people who fight for the homeless and those who fight to bring home lost souls.

We are of all races and from all walks of life and, in most cases, not at all born into wealth and privilege. We struggle each day to support ourselves and our families. We are not perfect and are flawed in many ways. Perfectly imperfect, you could say, or at least that’s what I say.

I’m a Republican, but I see value in everyone I interact with in life. I appreciate opposing viewpoints and welcome spirited civil debate. As a publisher who has had the opportunity to work with some very liberal newsrooms, I think you could ask any journalist who has worked for me or with me, and they would tell you that I always respected them and their ideas.

I value respect and give and receive it, regardless of viewpoint or opinion.

So why am I voting for former President Trump? I will list a couple of reasons.

For starters, the mess at the border. Again, anyone can spin this in multiple ways. One could point a finger and say Trump stopped a border bill for political gain (many on the left have said that.) But the reality is, on day one of your presidency, the line at the border started, and it hasn’t stopped.

The murder and mayhem that media outlets sometimes deny is real. Just ask the families of those brutally murdered, raped, and robbed by criminals that were allowed into our country.

The increased gang violence in our towns and cities is real. Jocelyn Nungaray is real. Laken Riley is real. What is Vice President Kamala Harris’s plan to combat this when she was in power while this happened to our country? And the bigger question is, why would she fix it now when she or you, or both, allowed this flow of illegal immigration in the first place?

While Trump was in office:

  • Fully enforced and implemented statutorily authorized “expedited removal” of illegal immigrants.
  • The Department of Justice prosecuted a record-breaking number of immigration-related crimes.
  • Used Section 243(d) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) to reduce the number of aliens coming from countries whose governments refuse to accept their nationals who were ordered removed from the United States.
  • Instituted national security travel bans to keep out terrorists, jihadists, and violent extremists, and implemented a uniform security and information-sharing baseline all nations must meet in order for their nationals to be able to travel to, and emigrate to, the United States.
  • Deployed nearly 5,000 troops to the Southern border. In addition, Mexico deployed tens of thousands of their own soldiers and national guardsmen to secure their side of the US-Mexico border.

The economy. Inflation is coming down, and the stock market is gangbusters. But I would dare you to walk into a grocery store and tell me, or better yet, a young mom who is attempting to buy food for the week, that inflation is going down. Harris has suggested she would have done nothing different in the Biden-Harris administration.

On the campaign trail, former President Donald Trump introduced several proposals aimed at helping Americans manage the cost of living. Among these measures, Trump proposed a temporary cap on credit card interest rates at approximately 10%, less than half the current average rate.

He also pledged to make interest paid on car loans fully tax-deductible, similar to the existing mortgage interest deduction. Trump argues this would encourage car ownership, though some experts suggest it may primarily benefit wealthier Americans who itemize deductions and are more likely to purchase higher-priced vehicles.

For aging seniors and their families, Trump’s platform includes a tax credit for family caregivers, along with shifting resources to support at-home care and addressing disincentives that contribute to care worker shortages.

The final reason would be rhetoric from the left and you directly sometimes, sir. MAGA-extreme Republicans, Nazis, fascists, and now, garbage.

Yes, a comedian made a tasteless and, some would say, heartless joke; it happens in the world of comedy.

But one comedian’s joke doesn’t represent half of the country’s feelings or thoughts, and it sure as hell doesn’t make us garbage.
