Op-Ed: Democrats’ Tesla Tantrum—A Masterclass In Hypocrisy

The Democrats have a hypocrisy problem, and it’s on full display with the recent wave of Tesla vandalism sweeping the nation. Once the darlings of the electric vehicle (EV) revolution, Tesla cars are now being torched, keyed, and spray-painted with “Nazi cars” by left-wing activists—often with nary a peep of condemnation from the party that spent years preaching the gospel of green energy.

Meanwhile, those same Democratic lawmakers wringing their hands over Trump’s economy today were conspicuously silent for four years as Biden’s inflation crushed American wallets. It’s a flip-flop so shameless it’d make a gymnast blush.

Let’s rewind. Under Biden, Democrats positioned themselves as EV evangelists. The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act dangled up to $7,500 in tax credits for Tesla buyers, part of a $174 billion push to electrify America’s roads. Biden took victory laps in hybrid Jeeps, and Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) cheered Massachusetts’ $22.9 million in charging station cash.

Tesla was their poster child—a sleek, planet-saving symbol of progressive virtue. Fast-forward to 2025: Elon Musk backs Trump, joins the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and suddenly, Teslas are fair game for Molotov cocktails. Dealerships burn from Oregon to Massachusetts, owners get doxxed on anti-Musk sites, and the FBI’s chasing arsonists. Where’s the outrage from the EV faithful?

Crickets—or worse.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) mustered a “vandalism is wrong” on X and said on CNN in March, “I’m not going to root against Tesla. There are 20,000 people who work in my district who make a living off of this. They’re building electric vehicles that ultimately are good for the climate. Have the protests and the conversation and criticism of musk just don’t take it out on a company where you have workers, where you have engineers, where you have scientists which are creating wealth for the country, which is helping the climate.”

But most Dems who once railed against “domestic terrorism” (think Sen. Dick Durbin’s 2023 bill) dodge questions like they’re allergic to microphones.

Fox News asked a flurry of them if Tesla attacks count as terrorism—silence. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Nancy Pelosi brushed off Capitol Hill queries. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) even hinted Musk should be “taken down” on a “Tesla Takedown” call, prompting a stern “tread carefully” from AG Pam Bondi.

The party that cried “white supremacy” over Jan. 6 now shrugs as Teslas blaze—ironic, given the swastikas scrawled on Cybertrucks by their own activist fringe.

It’s not just Tesla. The economy’s another flip-flop showcase.

Today, Democrats clutch pearls over Trump’s 4.2% unemployment rate and federal job cuts—228,000 jobs added in March. A CNN poll says 56% disapprove of his economic handling. Fair enough; voters can grumble.

But where was this fervor under Biden? Inflation hit 9.1% in June 2022, the highest in 40 years, gouging families on gas, groceries, and rent. Real wages sank for two years straight—BLS data shows a 1.9% drop from 2021 to 2023. Biden’s fix? “Buy a Tesla,” quipped Pete Buttigieg, as if a $60,000 car was a lifeline for the working poor. Democrats cheered stimulus checks and $1.9 trillion in spending, shrugging as the deficit ballooned and prices soared. Now they’re shocked—shocked!—that Americans feel pinched?

The thread tying these U-turns is power, not principle. Tesla was golden when it fit the climate narrative; now that Musk’s a Trump ally, it’s expendable—environmental fallout from burning batteries be damned.

The economy? A cudgel to bash Trump, but a non-issue when Biden’s “Build Back Better” meant $5 gas and empty shelves. Democrats loved EVs until they didn’t, and cared about inflation only when it wasn’t their mess.

Here’s the rub: hypocrisy doesn’t fix problems. Torching Teslas won’t undo Musk’s DOGE cuts, and retroactive economic whining won’t erase Biden’s record. Americans see through it.

Democrats could condemn the vandals and own their past silence. Instead, they’re betting on amnesia. Good luck with that in November.
