Left-wing Oklahoma state Rep. Forrest Bennett came up with what he thought was a clever way to shame conservatives for their attempts to restrict abortion.
“If Oklahoma is going to restrict a woman’s right to choose, we sure better make sure the man involved can’t just walk away from his responsibility,” he tweeted on Friday.
“This week I filed HB3129, which codifies that a father’s financial responsibility to his baby & their mom begins at conception.”
Yeah, about that.
It doesn’t exactly own conservatives to champion something they’ve spent decades advocating. On the other hand, the Oklahoma City Democrat breaks two of the cardinal rules of leftism.
First, he acknowledges that life begins at conception. Secondly, he indicates only women can get pregnant.
Bennett’s measure came in response to reports that Oklahoma Republicans may seek a number of limits on abortion, including a proposal that mirrors a Texas law that allows people to sue abortion providers or anyone who “aids and abets” an abortion, with a maximum penalty of $10,000.
His bill requires that a father pay half of the mother’s pregnancy expenses, including health insurance premiums or medical costs.
The funding even could be collected after birth, provided paternity can be proven.
At the conservative website Twitchy.com, they gathered a bunch of responses to Bennett’s tweet. It likely did not turn out as he planned.
One user tweeted to Bennett, “Congratulations, you’re a conservative.” Another added, “That’s kind of the pro-life argument dude.”
A third tweeted, “Good. That’s another issue we’ve wanted to tackle as well. At least now we will have the baseline that life begins at conception.”
“As a pro-life person, I agree. Just curious if you thought this would trigger us, because LOL if you did,” said another.
A Catholic priest in Michigan chipped in, “There’s nothing unreasonable about fathers providing for their children.”
Finally, Oklahoma GOP state Rep. Josh West, the House majority leader, added, “I’m going to make sure this bill gets a hearing. Who knew Forrest was such a champion for pro-life?”
