An Ohio tourist was bitten by a shark while playing football in knee-deep water at New Smyrna Beach on Thursday, July 4th.

The 21-year-old man was enjoying a holiday when the incident occurred around 4 p.m. Officials from the New Smyrna Beach Beach Patrol say the man was bitten on his right foot.

Fortunately, the man’s injuries were not life-threatening. The tourist was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

This incident comes as no surprise to some. New Smyrna Beach, nicknamed “The Shark Bite Capital of the World,” frequently experiences shark encounters, though serious injuries are uncommon.

Beachgoers are reminded to stay vigilant in the water, especially during peak feeding hours for sharks (dawn and dusk). Avoid swimming alone and stay close to shore in shallow waters.
