A tragic incident in Columbus has resulted in the death of a young mother and the arrest of three individuals charged with murder. Alexa Stakely, 29, was killed on July 11th while attempting to rescue her 6-year-old son from her car as it was being stolen.

According to reports from the Columbus Division of Police, Stakely had just finished a late-night shift as a waitress and was picking up her son from a babysitter when the carjacking occurred.

As the suspects attempted to flee in her vehicle, Stakely bravely tried to stop them but was struck and fatally injured.

Following an intensive investigation, law enforcement arrested three individuals in connection with Stakely’s death: a 19-year-old man and two 16-year-old boys.

The first teenager, according to police, voluntarily turned himself in at police headquarters, accompanied by his parents, and agreed to be interviewed by detectives.

During the interview, the teen allegedly confessed to stealing Stakely’s vehicle and hitting her, the department reported.

Later that same day, police identified a second teenager believed to be involved in the killing. In an interview with detectives, this teen allegedly admitted to being present at the scene when Stakely was killed and informed police that a third person was also involved in the incident, according to the department.

Hours after the second teenager was arrested, police apprehended 19-year-old Gerald Dowling. He allegedly came to police headquarters and admitted his involvement.

All three have been charged with murder and related offenses.
