Ohio Man Gets 96 Months In Prison For Mailing Fentanyl To Mississippi

Justin Elkins, a 35-year-old man from Dayton, Ohio, was sentenced to 96 months (8 years) in federal prison for possessing fentanyl with the intent to distribute it while residing in Oxford, Mississippi, in April 2021.

According to court documents, Elkins was arrested and charged after law enforcement intercepted a package containing fentanyl that was sent through the U.S. mail.

He pled guilty to one count of attempting to possess fentanyl with intent to distribute and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock.

“The U.S. mail should never be used as a vehicle for distributing illicit drugs.” said U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner. “We will do everything in our power to see that people who choose to illegally distribute dangerous drugs like fentanyl into our communities are held accountable.”

In addition to the prison sentence, Elkins will serve three years of supervised release following his incarceration.

The U.S Postal Inspection Service, Oxford Police Department, and Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office’s Metro Narcotics Unit investigated the case. Assistant United States Attorney Paul Roberts prosecuted the case.
