The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have issued a joint statement detailing Iran’s ongoing attempts to influence U.S. elections.
Since an earlier public statement on August 19, 2024, the FBI has uncovered new information regarding Iran’s efforts to interfere with the electoral process. In late June and early July, Iranian cyber actors sent unsolicited emails to individuals connected with President Biden’s campaign.

These emails contained stolen, non-public material from former President Trump’s campaign. There is no evidence to suggest that the recipients responded to these emails. Additionally, the cyber actors have continued to distribute non-public Trump campaign material to U.S. media outlets.
This activity highlights Iran’s broader efforts to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral process, as outlined in the previous August statement.
House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Mike Turner (OH-10) commented on the findings and questioned the Biden-Harris admin, “Iran sent President Biden and Vice President Harris information by hacking the Trump campaign. What did they do with Iran’s espionage? Did they contact law enforcement? Is the Biden-Harris Administration colluding with Iran?”
The FBI, as the lead agency for threat response, has been actively tracking this malicious behavior and working with victims. The agency is continuing its investigation to disrupt those responsible. The statement also notes that foreign actors, including Russia, Iran, and China, are intensifying efforts to exploit societal divisions in the lead-up to the November election.

The FBI and CISA urge campaigns and election stakeholders to report suspicious activity. For reporting, individuals can contact their local Election Crimes Coordinators through FBI field offices, call 1-800-CALL-FBI, or submit reports online at ic3.gov.
Cyber incidents affecting election infrastructure can also be reported to CISA via phone or email. More information on election security and protection against cyber threats is available through CISA’s #PROTECT2024 initiative.
