NYC Transit Official Denies Driving Around With An Inflatable Pal

It’s understandable that people would go to unusual lengths to avoid New York City’s horrific traffic. But one man’s way to circumvent that is either creative or creepy.

On Wednesday, The New York Post reported that it had busted Giulio Divirgilio, a general superintendent with the Buses Department at the Big Apple’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, for hijacking the HOV lane on his commute.

Divirgilio drove into work with a passenger that didn’t seem legit. It was a suit-clad blow-up “businessman.”

Or as The Post reported, the “blown-up dummy [was] plopped in the front seat like ‘Otto Pilot in the 1980 comedy ‘Airplane!’”

“Confronted by The Post outside the East New York building, Divirgilio denied he had the inflatable suit-sporting businessman in tow to illegally cruise in lanes reserved for high-occupancy vehicles.”

“I don’t use it for the HOV,” he told the reporters. “I use it for the company.”

Company?

When reporters pressed him to ‘fess up, Divirgilio, a former New York City cop, persisted. “Have I ever lied to you?” he replied.

The Post noted that was likely the case, according to his staff.

“It was weird when we saw that thing [in his car] in the morning. Why would anyone have that there except to do HOV stuff?” one Bus Department employee, who requested anonymity, told The Post.

The transportation authority is investigating.
