Thursday afternoon, Governor Ron DeSantis held a press conference at the scene of the condo collapse in Surfside, Florida.
One person has been confirmed dead and 51 people unaccounted for as of Thursday afternoon. Police say that 35 people have been pulled from the building and two of them from the rubble by rescuers.
Governor DeSantis said, “I just want to give credit to the search of the fire department the first responders of Miami Dade County. They were on that scene before we knew whether there would be more collapse, and we didn’t know whether the building had any structural integrity. They were shepherding people to safety and they absolutely save people’s lives and so we really appreciate all that they have done and that they’re continuing to do.”
On Thursday morning, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue tweeted that it had more than 80 units there along with units from municipal fire departments. Miami Beach Police tweeted that “multiple police and fire agencies from across Miami-Dade” were assisting.
“They are in search and rescue mode, they are trying to identify survivors. I know they have made contact with some and they are they’re doing everything they can to save lives and that is ongoing and they’re not going to rest,” said DeSantis.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told the Miami Herald that the cause of the collapse was still unknown.
