North Carolina Man Who Goes By “Batman” Charged With Shooting Death Of Friend

A North Carolina man has been arrested in the shooting death of a friend after an apparent argument escalated.

On Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 12:50 p.m., deputies from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 545 Crystal Ln in Kannapolis after a person contacted 911 to report a family member had been shot.

The caller reported that the suspect, who had already left the area, went by the name Batman.

Arriving officers discovered 33-year-old Jonathan Wayne Yancey dead in the home from a single gunshot wound.

Witnesses at the scene identified the shooter as Concord resident Cody Dewayne Helms, 36. Helms was the victim’s friend, and they had an altercation just before the shooting.

Helms left the site after the killing but was apprehended by a Kannapolis Police officer who was aiding with the search one mile away.

Helms was charged with murder and lodged in the Rowan County Jail pending his first appearance.
