Western Carolina University has offered a novel way to demonstrate why a biological function experienced by half the population is called the “mens”truation cycle.
A video recently posted on social media revealed that the school installed a vending machine offering free feminine hygiene products in the restroom.
The men’s restroom.
The best part of all, this new service is paid for with proceeds from student fees.
The person who took the 14-second video, which was first reported on the Libs of TikTok Twitter account, demonstrated how the machine works and showed the letter explaining why the school was making the products available.
The recording then pans over to show the nearby urinals.
The letter itself says the machine is a pilot program implemented to comply with a recent resolution adopted by the university’s Student Government Association.
The resolution, according to the letter, called on the university to supply free menstrual products and “take other actions” to keep such items “affordable.”
The idea emerged from an online survey of students, the letter says.
In addition to making such products “centrally located” and “convenient,” the program aims to promote menstrual health.
Such vending machines also further the objectives of the university’s strategic plan to promote “inclusive excellence,” the letter states. The university did not explain in the letter why administrators felt it was necessary to install them in the men’s rooms.
