Two Russian TU-142 military aircraft were detected and monitored Friday by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) as they flew within the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian territory. NORAD emphasized that such Russian activity in the Alaska ADIZ is routine and not considered a threat.

An ADIZ is an area of international airspace adjacent to a country’s sovereign airspace where identification of aircraft is required for national security purposes.

NORAD utilizes a multi-layered defense system, including satellites, ground-based radars, airborne radars, and fighter aircraft, to track and identify aircraft and take necessary action. The organization remains prepared to defend North America with a variety of response options. Sources and related content
