President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday titled “Strengthening and Unleashing America’s Law Enforcement to Pursue Criminals and Protect Innocent Citizens.”
The order outlines a series of measures intended to bolster law enforcement capabilities at the state and local levels, and to address what the administration characterizes as impediments to effective policing.
Legal Defense for Law Enforcement: The Attorney General is directed to create a mechanism for providing legal resources and indemnification to officers facing expenses and liabilities from actions taken during their official duties.
Empowering State and Local Law Enforcement: Federal agencies are tasked with maximizing resources to provide best practices, expand training, increase pay and benefits, strengthen legal protections, seek enhanced sentences for crimes against officers, promote prison security, and improve crime data collection.

Review of Consent Decrees: The Attorney General is to review existing federal consent decrees and agreements with state and local law enforcement agencies, and modify or rescind those deemed to “unduly impede” law enforcement functions.
Use of National Security Assets: The Attorney General and Secretary of Defense are directed to increase the provision of excess military and national security assets to local law enforcement, and to explore how military resources can be used to prevent crime.
Holding State and Local Officials Accountable: The Attorney General is to pursue legal action against state and local officials who obstruct criminal law enforcement or engage in discriminatory practices under the guise of “diversity, equity, and inclusion” initiatives.
Homeland Security Task Forces: The order directs the use of Homeland Security Task Forces to advance the objectives of the order.

The executive order emphasizes the administration’s commitment to supporting law enforcement and addressing rising crime rates, which it attributes in part to what it calls the “demonization” of police by local leaders and the implementation of “harmful, illegal race- and sex-based ‘equity’ policies.”
