The National Hurricane Center is keeping a close eye on two weather systems that have the potential to develop into tropical depressions or storms.

The first disturbance, located north of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, is currently producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. While it’s moving quickly westward at about 20 mph, development is not expected due to strong upper-level winds.

The formation chance through 48 hours and 7 days remains low at 10 percent.

The second disturbance, situated in the western Caribbean Sea, is showing more promise for development. It’s associated with a broad area of low pressure that is becoming better-organized north of Honduras.

Environmental conditions appear favorable for this system to strengthen, and it could become a short-lived tropical depression or storm before moving inland over Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico on Saturday.

Regardless of whether it develops further, this system is likely to bring heavy rainfall to portions of Central America and southern Mexico through the weekend. It has a medium chance of formation, 50 percent, through both 48 hours and 7 days.
