Jamaal Bowman, a second-term Democratic representative and member of the influential “squad” in the House of Representatives, suffered defeat in his primary election Tuesday.
This loss, which came at the hands of a more moderate Democratic candidate, George Latimer, has ignited a broader conversation about the shifting dynamics within the Democratic Party, the role of Israel in shaping political discourse, and the future of the progressive coalition known as the squad.
The primary race between Bowman and Latimer was largely defined by their divergent views on the Israel-Hamas conflict, a issue that has become increasingly divisive within the Democratic Party. Bowman, a vocal critic of Israel’s handling of the war, accused the country of committing genocide and was an early proponent of a ceasefire.

In contrast, Latimer, the Westchester County Executive, enjoyed the backing of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a powerful pro-Israel lobbying group that spent millions against Bowman’s campaign.
The clash between the two candidates highlighted the growing rift within the Democratic Party, where a more moderate faction, often aligned with the pro-Israel establishment, finds itself at odds with the progressive wing, which has been increasingly critical of Israel’s actions. This divide has become a defining feature of the party’s internal dynamics, with the fate of the squad now hanging in the balance.
Bowman’s defeat marks a significant setback for the squad, a group of progressive lawmakers that have emerged as a powerful force within the Democratic Party. The squad, which includes representatives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib, has been at the forefront of the party’s left-wing movement, championing issues such as racial justice, economic inequality, and climate change.

Bowman’s loss, however, suggests that the squad’s influence may not be as impenetrable as once thought.
The AIPAC’s aggressive campaign against the progressive representative, coupled with a series of controversies surrounding Bowman, including an incident where he pulled a fire alarm in a House office building and a profanity-laced tirade, ultimately proved to be his undoing.
