Manhattan prosecutors have officially filed murder and other charges against Luigi Mangione, 26, in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The charges were confirmed through an online court docket.

Mangione is currently detained in Pennsylvania, where he faces separate charges, including possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery, and providing false identification to police. Authorities have not yet confirmed when Mangione will be transferred to New York to face the murder charges.

The circumstances surrounding the killing of the UnitedHealthcare executive remain under investigation, and law enforcement agencies in both states are working collaboratively on the case.

Further details about the alleged motive or connection between Mangione and the victim have not been disclosed. Prosecutors in Manhattan and Pennsylvania have emphasized that investigations are ongoing.

“Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” Mangione’s family said in a statement posted on social media late Monday by his cousin, Maryland lawmaker Nino Mangione. “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.”

The Mangione family has established a name for itself through various business ventures, including owning and operating several country clubs, healthcare facilities, and real estate companies. Among their holdings is Haysfield Country Club in Hunt Valley, a prestigious golf course and social club.

Adding to the family’s prominence, Luigi Mangione is the cousin of Maryland Republican Delegate Nino Mangione, who represents portions of Baltimore County.

Luigi’s family history reveals a legacy built by his late grandfather, Nicholas Mangione Sr., a self-made real estate developer with a diverse portfolio.

According to The Baltimore Banner, Nicholas Mangione Sr. owned not only country clubs but also nursing homes and even a radio station. His wife, Mary Mangione, who passed away in 2023, was remembered in her obituary for her philanthropic contributions to hospitals and her patronage of the arts.

The Mangione family’s business interests extend across various sectors. In 1978, they acquired Turf Valley Country Club, transforming it into a renowned golf resort and residential community. Their business ventures also include Lorien Health Services, a network of nursing homes, and WCBM-AM, a local radio station.

Despite his family’s affluent background, Luigi Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on firearm charges after an employee recognized him. Prior to his arrest, Mangione was a standout student in Baltimore, graduating as valedictorian of The Gilman School in 2016. Footage of him delivering a speech at the school’s 119th Founder’s Day ceremony has surfaced, offering a glimpse into his past.

“We recently became aware that the person arrested in connection with the killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO is a Gilman alumnus, Luigi Mangione, Class of 2016,” Henry P.A. Smyth, Gilman’s head of school, said in a statement. “We do not have any information other than what is being reported in the news.”
