Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson emphasized that the indictment is merely an accusation and that Patterson is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted the investigation, and Assistant United States Attorney Chandra Menon of the Public Integrity Unit is prosecuting the case.
