The FBI has officially declared the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans, which left 10 dead and 35 injured, as an act of terrorism. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning when a driver intentionally rammed a pickup truck into a crowd of revelers on Bourbon Street, followed by an exchange of gunfire with police.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is coordinating with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners in the wake of the tragedy. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has been in contact with Louisiana officials, including members of the state’s congressional delegation. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is also on the scene, assisting with the investigation into suspected improvised explosive devices (IEDs) found near the site.

“This morning, an individual drove a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing a number of people and injuring dozens of others,” the FBI said in a statement. “The subject then engaged with local law enforcement and is now deceased. The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism.”

Fox News Live anchor Arthel Neville said Wednesday, “Local authorities are reportedly saying this suspect may not have acted alone, and they’re looking for a couple of accomplices. Police agencies are investigating the Texas license plates on the pickup truck.”

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, who represents Louisiana’s 4th congressional district, called the attack “an act of pure evil” in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “Justice must be swift for anyone who was involved,” he wrote, offering prayers for the victims, their families, and first responders.

President Joe Biden spoke with New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell following the incident and has been receiving updates from DHS, the FBI, and his homeland security team. Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy, who was briefed by state police and federal officials, expressed confidence in the city’s preparedness and vowed that those responsible would face justice.

“The terrorists win if we allow them to strike terror in our hearts,” Cassidy said. “We shall track them down and bring them to justice.”

The FBI has taken over the investigation, citing specific factors that classify the event as an act of terrorism. Earlier, local and federal officials had conflicting views, with the mayor labeling the attack a “terrorist attack” and an FBI agent initially denying it. The determination to treat the incident as terrorism underscores its severity and the potential implications for national security.

ATF agents are focusing on the IEDs found at the scene, working to determine their viability. These devices could play a crucial role in understanding the scope and intent of the attack.

The tragic event has left New Orleans grappling with loss and uncertainty as it moves forward with its iconic events. Senator Cassidy reassured the public about safety measures for upcoming gatherings, including the Sugar Bowl at the Superdome.

“This is a horrific act of violence, but New Orleans is resilient,” Cassidy said. “We have protocols that work, and the city is prepared to respond.”

As the investigation unfolds, officials are urging the public to stay vigilant and cooperate with authorities. The tragedy has cast a shadow over New Year’s celebrations, but leaders are emphasizing strength and resilience in the face of terror.
