PASCO COUNTY, Fla. – Motorists and pedestrians in Trinity will need to adjust to a new traffic pattern on State Road 54 just east of Starkey Boulevard.

New mid-block pedestrian signals are now operational, providing a dedicated and safer way for people to cross the busy highway.

The newly installed signals and accompanying crosswalk aim to improve pedestrian safety in an area that previously lacked a protected crossing. This addition will allow individuals to traverse SR 54 with greater confidence and reduced risk.

The operation of the mid-block signals is designed to be straightforward for both pedestrians and drivers:

For Pedestrians: Crossing SR 54 will now involve a simple push of a button located at the crosswalk. Once activated, the traffic signal for vehicles will cycle through yellow to red.

Simultaneously, pedestrians will receive a “walk” signal accompanied by a countdown timer, indicating the time available to cross safely. Authorities emphasize that pedestrians should only begin crossing once the walk signal is illuminated and they have confirmed that vehicles have come to a complete stop.

For Drivers: These mid-block signals will function similarly to traditional intersection traffic lights, albeit in a location without a connecting road. When a pedestrian activates the signal, drivers will first see a yellow warning light, followed by a red light, requiring them to stop.

After the pedestrian crossing phase, the signal will return to green for vehicular traffic. Officials are urging drivers to remain vigilant, pay close attention to the new signals, and always ensure the crosswalk is clear of pedestrians before proceeding, even after the light turns green.

Local authorities are optimistic that these new mid-block pedestrian signals will significantly enhance safety for pedestrians in this area of SR 54. They are encouraging both drivers and pedestrians to familiarize themselves with the new traffic flow and exercise caution as everyone adapts to the change.
