A New Mexico man, Leif Hayman, received the maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison for attempting to hire an undercover ATF agent to murder his girlfriend’s mother for a mere $200.
According to the Department of Justice, Hayman used the website “rentahitman.com” to solicit a hitman, providing personal details and photographs of the intended victim. He expressed his desire to have her killed in multiple requests, even growing impatient with the website’s lack of response.

The website owner initially alerted local police, but their delayed response led to the involvement of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. An undercover ATF agent contacted Hayman, who confirmed his intentions and even discussed payment and methods for the murder.

On the day of the planned hit, Hayman indicated his caretaker also needed to be harmed. However, a struggle between Hayman and the caretaker caused the agent to abort the operation.
Hayman’s actions highlight the dangers of online platforms being misused for criminal activities. His sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences of such actions.
