The state Board of Education on Wednesday approved the creation of four new bachelor’s degrees at two state colleges. St. Petersburg College will get three of the degrees.
The new programs will be bachelor of science degrees in cardiopulmonary sciences and secondary English education and a bachelor of applied science degree in digital media.
Florida Gateway College in Lake City is slated to get a bachelor of science degree in business administration. All of the new degree programs except the digital media degree will launch in the fall semester later this year.

St. Petersburg College will begin offering the digital media degree in January. Matthew Liao-Troth, the school’s vice president for academic affairs, said the secondary English education degree program is designed to help fill a local workforce demand.
“Currently within Pinellas County we have a demand of over 118 new employees in this field every year. And it is a constant challenge for Pinellas County schools to find these qualified individuals,” Liao-Troth said during Wednesday’s board meeting.
The nearby University of South Florida also offers the secondary English education degree, Liao-Troth said, but can not “meet the demand that there is for this education credential.”
The other two new degrees that St. Petersburg College will be offering, Liao-Troth said, are not offered by USF.
