Rebekah Jones, the disgraced former Florida Department of Health analyst who now seeks to capture Rep. Matt Gaetz’s congressional seat, is apparently floating fake documents to make the case that she was a whistleblower.
NBC News reporter Marc Caputo, a longtime Florida political reporter, posted on Twitter on Wednesday that Jones has posted fabricated documents on her campaign’s Instagram account to sell the case that the state saw her allegations against Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis as credible.
Jones, a former data-cruncher at the Health Department, claimed she was fired after she reported that the DeSantis administration was covering up COVID-19 data on deaths.
While the left-wing media immediately embraced her, a department inspector general’s report earlier this year found that her claims were unsubstantiated and unfounded. Jones is also under investigation for pilfering sensitive data from the Health Department.
Nonetheless, Florida Panhandle Democrats made her the party’s nominee to take on incumbent GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz.
In a brief Twitter string on Wednesday, Caputo generously noted that Jones had posted an “incomplete document” about her whistleblower claim to the Florida Commission on Human Relations.
Jones conveniently excluded the second page from the commission’s summary of her charges, in which it ruled “There is not reasonable cause to believe Respondent [the Health Department] subjected Complainant [Jones] to unlawful whistleblower retaliation.”
The copy Jones posted on Instagram also asserted that she “demonstrated” that the department violated the whistleblower law. Caputo reported that a commission spokesman told him that term does not appear anywhere in the original document.
Caputo also noted that document came out after the Health Department’s IG report ripped Jones for making up claims about her job and the end of her time at the department.
“Jones can still sue the state & press a whistleblower claim,” he added on Twitter. “But her long history of false & misleading statements —and the lack of evidence for her claims so far — could make it difficult for her to win.”
In addition to lying about the commission’s report on her case, Jones also has lied about the law enforcement raid on her home in which agents seized evidence that she absconded with Health Department records and she was nearly removed from the ballot for lying about living in Maryland when she became a candidate in the race against Gaetz.
In response to Caputo’s tweets, Gaetz tweeted, “It appears my opponent is a pernicious liar.”
